My Son Sanctuary – former holy site of Cham people

To start with, in the morning the guide and the driver will come and meet you up at the hotel in Hoi An and we commence Hoi An Private Tour. First, we are heading to My Son Sanctuary; the former holy site of the Cham who lived in central Vietnam from 2nd to 14th century. In the old days, this place became the very sacred place for them to honor Hindu Gods of Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma.

Thus, My Son was built in a lush green forest and it had a total of approximately 70 temples. According to some research, the French people came here first in 1885 and discovered My Son Holyland in a dense jungle forest. Later on, they cleared the jungle up and found out lots of valuable artifacts and statues left by the Cham people. Since then, the French archaeologists came to conclude that My Son Sanctuary strongly had Indian influences.

Accordingly, each group of temple in My Son Sanctuary has a main temple where the Cham people worship a set of linga and yoni which symbolize for fertility. Besides, there are various temples with different functions around the main temple. Also, the entrance of the main temple faces to the east that the Cham people think is the direction of the sun and where the gods live. Long time ago, the Cham people annually came to My Son Holyland to worship Hindu Gods. And by the way, they prayed for fertility, happiness, wealth, bumper crop, better climate and so on.
