Thus, My Son Sanctuary was the most holy place for the Cham people who lived here in the old days from 2nd to 14th century. It became the site where the Cham who presented ceremonial offerings to Hindu Gods including Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu ect. In a lush green beautiful valley, there are dozens of red brick towers built dating back thousands years ago.
Beauty of My Son Sanctuary
Earlier, My Son was built from 7th to 13th century inside a jungle and the French discovered it in 1895. Later, they cleared up the jungle and saw lots of temples and a bunch of sand stones statues that deeply had Indian influences. After doing more research on the site, the French scientists came to conclude that My Son was the most typical and important Hindu site for not only Cham people in Vietnam but also for Southeast Asian region.
In total, My Son consisted of various groups of A, A’, B, C, D, G, E, F, H, K and had roughly 70 temples. Each group had a main temple of Kalan where the Cham worship a set of Linga and Yoni. And some auxilliary temples and towers around to play different functions such as water storage, changing room, house of meditation ect. In old times, the Cham had come here once a year to pray for better bumper rice crop, prosperity, happiness and fertility for the whole country.
However, the war mostly devastated My Son in 1968. Some of temples remained intact and it gets restored by many countries. On Dec 4th, 1999, My Son Sanctuary was recognized as World Cultural Heritage.

At arriving in My Son, we are going to stroll around and pay a visit to main areas of B, C, D where the temples are still well preserved. After that, we walk cross a stream and visit group G, followed by visits to group E, F. Through stories of tour guide, we know more of Cham diversified culture as well as their skillful hands in building such an imposing complex. Later on, we come to watch Champa Apsara dancing show to know more Cham people working’s life.
Eventually, we will walk back out and then the guide and our jeep will transfer you back to Hoi An. On the way back, we stop in a while to visit a rice factory where the local people make rice noodles. You can see how hard the life is!
